November - Kindness

In guidance classes this month, our focus will be on kindness and ways to show kindness to others and why kindness matters.
The students are decorating a snowman to be hung on the Middle and Upper School's "Snowman Tree".  They learned how the snowmen will be used to decorate and display a child in need.

Our community service project for this month is "The Manger".
“The Manger”, a Graceworks program, is a store like environment where families hand select gifts for their children and pay a nominal fee ($.50 or $1.00 each). This method allows parents the dignity of providing Christmas for their families and to pick gifts their children will want and/or are meaningful to them versus being treated like a charity case and have strangers provide gifts. Families who register for “The Manger” live under a specific income guideline and live in Williamson County.

I recently read two articles that I thought are worth passing along to parents. I hope they are helpful to you.  Take a look

.
  You will find them:

"The BGA Way"

We are beginning a new way to promote valuable character traits this year.  The children will receive a blue rubber bracelet with the logo “The BGA Way”. This is to help remind them to practice these traits not only at school, but at home and in the community as well.  The traits that we will be focusing upon this year are respect, responsibility, cooperation, trustworthiness, kindness, perseverance, courage and compassion.  Each month will focus on one specific trait with specific ways to practice.

September

Respect - to show esteem for; honor; show consideration

This is our character trait for the month of September.  We are teaching and practicing ways to show respect to others, ourselves and our belongings.  Help us by reinforcing these skills at home by practicing manners such as please, thank you, excuse me, etc. Also, by taking turns and speaking to others in nice tones. These are only a few examples of how you can practice at home.  Be sure when you see your child show respect that you let them know how much you appreciate this and how it helps everyone.

October

Responsibility- being reliable, trustworthy

This is the trait that we will be talking about and practicing for the month of October.  In the younger grades, we have a coloring book about wearing their safety belts, bike helmets and being safe outside.  In the older grades, we will talk about making responsible choices and the consequences that go along with those choices.  At home, use the words responsible or responsibility along with their choices to help reinforce these skills taught here at school.

Red Ribbon Week

During the week of October 26-30, we will be participating in Red Ribbon week.  This is a week where schools all across the nation celebrate being drug free.  Here at the Lower School, we participate by having daily themes where the students dress up and receive a cooridinating sticker.  We focus on how to take care of our bodies by eating healthy, getting plenty of exercise, rest and making other healthy choices.

Take a look in the Wildcat Weekly for the Daily Themes.
